Diverse ethnocultural research samples are essential for conducting research that is both meaningful and applicable across various ethnicities, cultures, and social backgrounds. Despite extensive evidence supporting the importance of diverse research representation, a predominant majority of research participants remain White, university-educated, and middle-class. This creates a notable barrier to achieving diversity, equity, and inclusion in both research endeavours and their real-world applications. Among those least likely to be represented in research are individuals with low English-language proficiency.

Volentia Research Translation provides low-cost research-related language translation, transcription, and interpretation services for research investigators in Canada. By equipping research investigators with low-cost language services, our mission is to promote greater ethnocultural diversity among research populations to enhance the generalizability of Canadian research. At the same time, we hope to break down the barriers that impede the research participation of those with limited English-language proficiency. We also collaborate with healthcare authorities in Canada to promote greater language representation in healthcare-related informational materials. By being integrated in both healthcare and research, we hope to advance health equity in BC and improve the health outcomes for minority, marginalized, and underserved communities.

Our team of over 100 UBC students collectively encompasses proficiency in over 14 languages. All students possess full professional linguistic proficiency, are required to pass a language exam and a Criminal Record Check, complete the Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS 2), engage in cultural safety training provided by the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), and sign a Confidentiality Form prior to being able to volunteer.
